Habitudes: A Character and Leadership Training Program for Athletes

Growing Leaders has developed a unique leadership training program specifically geared for student athletes to prepare them for excellence in both their sport and life after school. The curriculum is based on the series of books entitled Habitudes: Images that Form Leadership Habits and Attitudes, written by Dr. Tim Elmore, the President of Growing Leaders.

Research by Dr. Leonard Sweet suggests that today’s generation of students is “EPIC."
E: Experiential: They want an experience, not just information
P: Participatory:They want to participate in outcomes, not just hear a lecture
I: Image-driven: They are driven by images and pictures more than words
C: Connected: They want to be connected relationally and work in teams

The Habitudes curriculum uses powerful images to teach important character principles in an EPIC fashion that is engaging and memorable. As a result, student athletes are equipped and empowered to develop healthy character-based leadership skills that will positively impact their lives both on and off the playing field.

Habitudes By Tim Elmore

Course One: Habitudes: The Art of Self Leadership

The initial Habitudes course is called “The Art of Self-Leadership.” The major themes discussed are the development of character, self-discipline, personal values, responsibility, initiative, self-esteem, time management, building a support network, positive attitudes regarding conflict, and developing a personal plan for growth.

The course for the second year of the program is called “The Art of Connecting with Others.”  The images in this phase teach principles for developing effective relationship skills such as conflict resolution, teamwork, and building trust with team members.

The third year of the program is entitled “The Art of Leading Others and Changing Culture.”  The major leadership principles taught include casting vision, setting goals, leading effective teams, handling criticism, and leveraging your influence to positively impact others on the team.

The course format is time-efficient and non-intimidating—a ten-minute DVD session each week including both interviews with real athletes and examples of the Habitudes in action. Each session will focus on one Habitude (or principle) per week and are based on an “image” that reminds athletes of the principle being taught each time they see it. An in-depth Coach's Guide compliments the DVD session by providing the facilitator with creative ideas, movie clip suggestions, player assessments, and of course practical applications for the athlete's lives.

Teams that use the Habitudes Program, like the University of Texas Football Team and the Kansas City Royals Baseball Club, have noticed improved teamwork and performance both on and off the field.

Character Development Training

“The Habitudes program without a doubt has been our most impactful program. I’m so excited about the unity that it’s creating between our coaches, our players and our front office staff. As we begin to develop championship-caliber players, we understand that will never happen unless these players have the ability to make good decisions off the field and on the field as well.”
Dayton Moore / General Manager / Kansas City Royals

        Student Leadership Training Program

This course is tailored for student athletes, who have little time, but a great need to develop disciplines that guide their entire life, not just playing time. The desired outcome is that it will be a catalyst to motivate players to grow in their character and use the influence they already have in a positive way as they participate in sports and go through life after college.

Growing Leaders is a non-profit organization which serves public schools, state universities, and civic organizations, as well as faith-based organizations and churches. Our mission is to develop young leaders who will transform society. Our goal is to equip and mobilize one percent of the world’s population under the age of 25 (30 million students) to think and act like authentic, life-giving leaders. We will do this by helping them discover their purpose, equipping them for leadership and showing them how to use their gifts to serve the world around them. We are about youth leadership development.
